But it is also felt when you return to work. The projects that were put on hold in your absence now require you to work late hours to get back on track. You have endless phone calls and emails to respond to and your weekly meetings eat up so much of your time during the day, any rest you had on vacation is long forgotten. You’re more stressed and overwhelmed than before your trip, causing you to wonder why you took time off in the first place? Read more

5 Tips to Give Your Team Professional Feedback

If you dug through the files in your brain that recorded performance reviews, you will most likely find two categories: “Keep” and “Shred.” You want to shred the memories associated with a bad performance review. But interestingly enough, you received some negative feedback over the years that you’ve filed into the “keep” folders. What makes you want to shred certain memories is not actually the review itself, but the way you received it—the way it made you feel. You felt embarrassed when you received negative feedback in front of your team and superiors. You felt angry at the condescending way the review was delivered. You realize that the when, who, and how the feedback was given made a greater impact than the feedback itself. The good and the bad feedback stowed away in the “keep” files actually helps you be a better manager today. You recall the way you felt motivated to do better next time, or empowered to keep up the good work. So, now that you’re the one giving performance reviews, you attempt to mimic the timing and manner in which specific reviewers once delivered feedback to you. Read more

Three Communication Principles that Matter

Have you ever discounted someone by their communication style? We analyze tone, decipher honesty, and interpret motives when we hear others communicate, especially those in authority. Whether it’s a news reporter, social media influencer, parent, or manager, we quickly decide who is trustworthy, who is authentic, and who is relevant in just a few minutes. If you want to build a team of men and women who trust your leadership, it may be time to adjust your communication tactics. By adopting three simple principles and applying them to both your advertising and internal communication, you’ll see your team support you and your clients champion you. Read more

Is Productive Conflict Possible?

Tension hangs in the air. You can’t believe your colleague just said that--at all, let alone in a conference meeting. Most of the men and women sitting around the large wooden table are pretending to look through their notes, some check email on their phone. No one has said a word in what has been the longest minute you’ve ever endured. Maybe you should have been more understanding, given him another chance to speak up before you shut him down. But now you’re too shocked and angry to give him the benefit of the doubt. You’re both staring at one another, playing an unspoken game of “chicken” with your eyes. You dare him to look away as if that will help the situation. You take a deep breath, will your voice to be calm, and conclude the meeting. You ask the others to leave the conference room, but you invite your colleague to stay. His perspective isn’t wrong, but what he said to you was. And you have something to apologize for, too. Through the years, you’ve learned that even though you don’t see eye to eye on an issue, resolving it will be so much more effective than ignoring it. Yes, addressing conflict is a tiresome activity, but not nearly as exhausting as carrying around resentment. You have work to do and this project is more important than your pride. Read more

The Value of DiSC Workplace Training

Have you asked yourself the following questions:

As said by Benjamin Franklin, “Nothing is certain but death and taxes.” However, people are wired to prefer consistency and fear change. In our earliest ancestors, change could lead to detrimental circumstances; weather changes, death, location changes, lack of food and water, new, unknown threats. These realities became hard-wired into our psyche and even now in 2020, the instinctual reaction to change is typically fear. Read more

How to Respond to These 7 Tricky Work Scenarios

We’ve all been there; the pressure is at an all-time high, your thoughts are going in a million different directions, and one little thing seems to derail your brain and mouth’s ability to communicate. As author of Choke, Sian Beilock teaches, this paralysis occurs when your brain is suddenly overtaxed by worry or pressure leaving you unable to respond to a mental psychological, or emotional challenge in the immediate moment. Read more

How Do We Work with Generation Y?

Management styles of yore still lurk in the hallways of business big and small all around the world today.
