Having a fully functioning team sounds important on paper but filling the position with the wrong person can lead to a disaster. As you filter through resumes, conduct countless interviews, and search for the right person for the job, you’ll find that EI (emotional intelligence) is more beneficial than IQ. Recruiting requires a strong understanding of emotions–both in yourself and job candidates. As well as empathy and discretion. Because emotional intelligence cannot be learned through book study, it is a valuable skill set. Below, we’ll discuss why EI is necessary when it comes time to recruit someone for a vacant position in your organization. Read more

How to Manage Stress in the Workplace

Feeling overwhelmed and overscheduled is just a part of life, right? She asks Joey a series of simple “would you rather questions” and tells him to answer as quickly as possible. Without time to think, he can express his true feelings and easily make a decision. She starts by asking random things like, “Would you rather eat egg whites or peanut butter?” before asking him the question he’s really trying to answer. As always, it’s comical, but it does make you wonder whether that’s a helpful decision-making tool. When we have time to analyze, we may talk ourselves out of the best answer and find reasons to justify another choice. Let’s try it! In your mind, try to answer the following questions quickly without pausing to consider the pros and cons. First, relax. Take a deep breath, and try to clear your mind. You and your siblings are playing Monopoly, and your sister’s yellow houses are popping up everywhere. It seems like each time you roll the dice you owe her rent. You try to block her, keep her from building hotels, but it’s pointless. She knows the importance of playing the game swiftly and slowly, and she’s undoubtedly reaping the benefits. If you remember the rules of the game, the key is to purchase one piece of property after another within the same color group. Once you own the color group, then you can develop the properties by building houses or hotels. However, it all must be developed equally. For example, you cannot build a second house until you have built one house on every property. When it comes to filling roles in your organization, it’s wise to apply the same concept. Don’t jump ahead. You’ll win when you develop your organization from the ground up, focusing first on the roles that increase productivity.

When your company is facing a crisis, eyes are watching; fingertips are ready to alert the Twitterverse of your fate. Will supporters be able to stand by your side and announce that you are expertly leading your team to calmer waters? Or will you falter, allowing the skeptics to pronounce that you’re sinking? The way you respond to the crisis at hand will not only determine you and your company’s reputation, but it will set the precedence for future problems. Three schools of thought will help you evaluate how prepared you are to lead your company in a crisis. We’ll lay them out for you and give you a question to consider so that when a crisis does occur, you’re ready to lead, not just manage your situation. Read more

Financial Impact of Unmotivated Employees

In a recent Gallup Poll, a staggering 66% of employees are neither engaged nor inspired or worse, actively disengaged at work.
